THE 49000 DOLLAR LIGHTS

PA. AND PENN HILLS PRIDE THEMSELVES ON "GOING GREEN" BUT THE SR.HIGH
CAMPUS IS ANOTHER STORY. MYSELF AND MY NEIGHBORS LOVE TO WALK IN THE EVENINGS AROUNT THE CAMPUS BECAUSE OF NO TRAFFIC WORRIES.
COMMENTS WERE MADE ABOUT THE LARGE NUMBER OF LIGHTS THAT WERE ON.
ONE EVENING I DECIDED TO COUNT THE NUMBER OF LIGHTS AND COUNTED
135 LIGHTS WERE ON DURING THE WEEK WHEN THE GATES ARE OPEN.
THE MAJORITY OF THESE ARE POLE OR HIGH INTENSITY .
SOME OUTSIDE LIGHTS ARE LEFT OF 24 HRS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK.ON THE WEEKEND WHEN THE GATE ARE LOCKED AND THE CAMPUS IS MORE SECURE THERE ARE AT LEAST 15 MORE LIGHTS THAT ARE LIT.
THE QUESTION COMES TO MIND AS TO WHY THE TAXPAYERS AER PAYING FOR ALL THIS LIGHTING WHICH INCLUDES ELECTRICTY,BULBS AND THE COST OF CHANGING BURNED OUT ONES. 7 DAYS A WEEK 365 DAYS A YEAR.IF THE LIGHTING COST IS
$1.OO A DAY EACH THAT'S $135 A DAY OR $49000 A YEAR AT 1 SCHOOL CAMPUS. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO THINK WHAT THE TAXPAYERS ARE SPENDING OVER THE WHOLE SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR LIGHTING. I THINK $49K MIGHT BE BETTER SPENT.

Walt....if they weren't lit,you wouldn't have a secure place to walk.

49k here and 49k there and pretty soon we are talking about some real money. The preliminary budget given on the school website does not break out utilities but I'm sure they have gone up dramatically over the past 5 years. What may have been acceptable waste of water and electricity a few years ago needs to be scrutinized now and eliminated.
I drive my family and coworkers crazy by shutting off lights and computers that are not being used. I am also collecting rainwater to water my garden. Need to be frugal during the coming/current depression.
Perhaps they should have a policy that if savings are identified, the person who identifies the cost savings gets a percentage of the savings or a fixed bonus.
They'll be spending a lot more than $49K the first time someone sues the school district when they trip and fall in the dark.
