Bernice Gaines petitioned a higher power for guidance when she retired in 1998.

"Lord, what do you want me to do now?" asked Gaines, now 73, of Penn Hills. "My children are grown and I don't really know what to do with myself."

The answer eventually came from the Foster Grandparent Program of Southwestern Pennsylvania, a federal program sponsored locally by the American Red Cross, the Pittsburgh Trib reports.
