Forbes students receive honors

Anthony Taglieri from Forbes Road Career and Technology Center in Monroeville will represent Pennsylvania in the National Skills-USA Competition this June in Kansas City, Mo., after winning the SkillsUSA State Competition this month in Hershey.

Anthony, a Woodland Hills High School student who attends Forbes, won first place in the culinary arts competition.

Second-place state winners were T.J. Hartin, Woodland Hills, firefighting; Brandon Sherry, Gateway, Internet-working; Charla Hubbard, East Allegheny, medical assisting; and Katie Burton, Plum, dental assisting.

Third-place winners were Mike Smith, Woodland Hills, diesel; Joel Carter, Highlands, Job Skill B; and Beth Lindner, Wilkinsburg, sheet metal.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.

Several students were chosen to represent Forbes Road in the state competition following the District 8 competition held earlier this year.

• Plum -- Jake Swetof, automotive service technician; Tucker Wilkins, Dan Varga and Jonathan Clements, automated manufacturing team; Nicole Cantola, commercial baking.

• Riverview -- Kenny Honsperger, building maintenance technician.

• Gateway -- Ed Tworek, computer maintenance; Christina Lippke, customer service (travel/tourism); Brandon Sherry, Internetworking.

• Wilkinsburg -- Beth Linder, sheet metal.

• Highlands -- Joel Carter, job skills demo (multimedia); Darci Falleroni, nail care; Kelly Zier, nail care (model).

Students who received byes in the competition are: Plum -- Joe Susalla, criminal justice; Katie Burton, dental assisting; East Allegheny -- Charla Hubbard, medical assisting; and Gateway -- Kayla Byrne, preschool teaching.

• Woodland Hills -- Bryan King, first aid/CPR; Joshua McKnight, technical computer applications.

• Highlands -- Scott Scaggs, food and beverage; George Stettmier, precision machining; Noah Purdy, prepared speech (computers).

• Gateway -- Sheearla Kimbrough, nurse assisting.

• Plum -- Stephanie Buckley, photography; Nate Delaney residential wiring.

• Allegheny Valley -- Ashley Queen, job skills demo; Jonathan Cramer, technical-related math.

Third-place winners

• Gateway -- Mary Cheripka, cosmetology; Bill Dinatale (model).

• Plum -- David Bender, HVAC.

• Highlands -- Jordan Toth, cabinet making.
