The Penn Hills varsity boys volleyball team finished second in Section 3-AAA with a 10-2 record.
The Indians wrapped up the section schedule last week with victories over Penn-Trafford (3-0) and Woodland Hills (3-0). They also scored a 3-0 non-section win over non-section Fox Chapel.
Now, with the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye under its belt, Penn Hills is ready to battle for a WPIAL AAA title.
The Indians will open the playoffs in the quarterfinal round on Monday at home against the winner of Seneca Valley versus Upper St. Clair.
The first-round matchup between the Raiders and Panthers is tonight (Thurs- day) at 7:30 p.m. at Montour. Seneca Valley is the No. 2 team from Section 2 and Upper St. Clair is the No. 4 team from Section 1.
Penn Hills head coach Dan Brown said Seneca Valley, being the higher seed, should advance past Upper St. Clair, but nothing is for sure as upsets happen in the playoffs.
He said he'll know more about the team the Indians will face after seeing tonight's match.
"We saw Seneca Valley earlier in the season, but I'm sure they've improved and will do things differently," Brown said. "We don't know too much about Upper St. Clair."
North Allegheny picked up the No. 1 seed after claiming the Section 1 title. Section 2 champion Bethel Park is seeded second, while Norwin, champions of Section 3, claimed the No. 3 seed.
Brown said he thought Penn Hills might grab the No. 3 seed over Norwin because of the Indians' strong 3-0 victory over the Knights in the teams' most recent meeting.
At the same time, Brown is happy his team is where it's at.
"The rest is nice," Brown said. "We're looking to get everyone healthy. Hopefully, the guys can keep up the momentum they gained after beating Plum (May 1) and a strong final week of the regular season. We're excited and pleased with the way things turned out."
Brown hopes to have Will Piccolino back for Monday's playoff game. The Penn Hills senior outside hitter missed the Fox Chapel match and was limited against Penn-Trafford and Woodland Hills due to illness.
"Will's been a strong player for us this year," Brown said.
"He hasn't practiced much. We want him to conserve his energy. Everyone else is in pretty good shape."
