Foster
Jerrod Foster has been selected to join Indiana University of Pennsylvania's McNair Scholars Program.
IUP is one of approximately 180 colleges and universities nationwide that receives federal funding to host a McNair program, which promotes entry into graduate school for first-generation, low-income and minority students through mentoring and other special educational opportunities.
The McNair program at IUP serves 25 students each year, providing academic support services and opportunities to conduct original research and earn stipends worth $2,500.
IUP's McNair students participate in a six-week residential summer research experience to develop proposals under the direction of faculty mentors, then present their work at local symposiums and national McNair research conferences.
The program's name honors Ronald McNair, a NASA mission specialist who died aboard space shuttle Challenger during its 1986 explosion.
Foster, a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, is a 2006 graduate of Penn Hills High School. He is the son of Jessie A. Smith and Larry Foster.
