Eagles track and field club hosts annual league meet
The Penn Hills Eagles track and field club hosted more than 25 teams and more than 540 athletes at its 10th annual invitational Saturday at McGinley-Yuhas Stadium.
The meet was part of the Three Rivers Association season, which conducts meets at different locations throughout May and June. The Three Rivers Association is affiliated with USA Track and Field.
Athletes from ages 8 to 18 braved rain showers to compete in events from the 100- and 200-meter dashes to the 80-meter hurdles, the long jump and the discus.
"The kids are pretty dedicated," said Chuck Carter, a coach with the Penn Hills Eagles program.
"It's like a football game. They compete in the rain."
Several Penn Hills athletes took home top finishes in the all-day event. Penn Hills grabbed 17 first-place awards.
Hasaan Ismaeli won the 200 and 400 dashes and the 800 run in the sub-bantam boys division.
Also in the sub-bantam boys division, the Penn Hills 4x100 relay team was victorious.
In the midget boys division, Seth Rouse claimed first in the 400 dash, the 800 run and the 1,500 run.
Gloria Schifino won the 100 hurdles race in the youth girls division.
In the youth boys division, Denzel Sherrill won the 100 and 200 dashes, while Brandon Mitchell won the 100 hurdles, and Brandon Nelson was first in the triple jump.
The Penn Hills 4x100 relay won in the boys youth division as well.
Qaadir Anderson-Perry took first in the intermediate boys discus and javelin events.
Josh Douglass won the intermediate boys triple jump.
In the young women division, Breanne Patterson placed first in the discus.
The Three Rivers Association Junior Olympic Championships are Saturday and Sunday at South Fayette High School.
It is a qualifying event for the Region 2 JO Championships, set for July 3 to 6 at Carnegie Mellon University.
Athletes from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Delaware will descend on CMU.
The USATF National JO Championships are set for July 22 to 27 in Omaha, Neb.
