Four compete at tryouts

Penn Hills American Legion Baseball players Matt Schoffstall, Joe Aleprete, Tom Fulton and Jeff Miller competed in the second round of all-star tryouts Monday at CCAC-Boyce Field in Monroeville.

Head coach Chuck Schoffstall said he thought one or more of the quartet would advance to the next round of tryouts, set for today at CCAC-Boyce.

However, none of the four Penn Hills players were selected, something that left coach Schoffstall scratching his head.

Eighteen players, two from every position, were selected from a player pool of the Allegheny River League and the Mon-Yough League.

Penn Hills was scheduled to face Monroeville last night (Wednesday) at Penn Hills High School.

Penn Hills went into the game with Monroeville at 7-3 in the Allegheny River League standings.

It hosts Plum tomorrow (Friday) at 6 p.m. and Elliott from the Ohio River League on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Penn Hills picked up two wins last week.

It defeated West Deer, 14-5, and Pleasant Hills, 8-4.

In the game against West Deer, Jeff Miller picked up the win with a complete game.

Fulton, Tom Maxwell and Matt Schoffstall each had two hits to pace Penn Hills.

Miller got the win in relief against Pleasant Hills as Penn Hills rallied from a 4-0 deficit after three innings.

Aleprete started and worked three innings.

Kraig Borman went 4 for 4 to lead Penn Hills. Dan Maxwell added two hits in as many at bats.
