Gateway wins 22 Keystone awards
Gateway Newspapers will receive 22 Keystone awards at the 2008 Pennsylvania Press Conference.
All of the awards recognized work published during 2007.
Entries in the statewide Keystone competition, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors, were organized for judging in categories with newspapers of comparable circulation.
Division VII winners are:
• Bill Hartlep and Michael Love, Penn-Trafford Star, second place in sports event coverage for "U.S. Open Championship."
• Daveen Rae Kurutz, McKnight Journal, second place in news beat reporting for education.
• Rachel Weaver, Penn-Trafford Star, second place in series for "When roles reverse."
• Bill Hartlep, Penn-Trafford Star, first place in sports beat reporting for Penn-Trafford girls soccer.
• Brian Estadt, Penn-Traf-ford Star, first place in headline writing.
Division VIII winners are:
• Jeff Widmer, Bridgeville Area News, first place in investigative reporting for "San Francisco treat."
• Vincent Townley, Coraopolis Moon Record, second place for editorial writing.
• Alan Wallace, The Times Express, honorable mention for editorial writing.
• Tawnya Panizzi, The Herald (Aspinwall), second place in general news coverage for "Lightning strikes."
• Staff, The Advance Leader, first place in ongoing news coverage for U.S. Open coverage.
• Dave Titmus, David McElhinny, Kristy Locklin and Aaron Bruckart, North Journal, first place in special projects for "Ghosts of Halloweens past."
• Zandy Dudiak, The Times Express, first place in series for "Becoming American"; first place in feature beat reporting for health.
• Kristina Serafini, Sewickley Herald, second place in series for "Passport to prayers."
• Misty Chybrzynski, The Herald (Aspinwall), first place in sports story for "Great strides."
• Staff, South Hills Record, first place in sports event coverage for WPIAL coverage.
• Bill Hartlep and Michael Love, The Times Express, honorable mention in sports event coverage for "U.S. Open Championships."
• Marty Stewart, The Herald (Aspinwall), second place in sports/outdoor column for "Stew says."
• Rachel Weaver, South Hills Record, second place in news feature story for "Cyber charter schools provide opportunities."
• Holly Usher, The Advance Leader, second place in business or consumer story for "Inventionland allows employees to be kids again."
• Bill Hartlep, Norwin Star, second place in sports beat reporting for Norwin football.
• Jan Pakler, Pine Creek Journal, honorable mention in sports photo for "Access denied."
