Lady Indian relay quartet sets records at meet
The Penn Hills girls relay quartet of Arrie Smith, Taelor Fowler, Gisele Adanlete and Jordan Lee set meet records in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays Saturday at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Championships at West Mifflin High School.
The team won the 4 x 100 with a record-setting time of 48.84, besting second-place Schenley (50.51).
Smith, Fowler, Adanlete and Lee edged Norwin for the 4 x 400 title, winning with a meet-record time of 4:01.93.
"When Lee got the anchor baton (in the 4 x 400), she wasn't going to let anything beat her," said Sara Miller, Penn Hills girls head coach.
"Norwin had the lead at the final handoff. Lee drafted off Norwin's last runner and turned it on over the last 100. The girls have worked their tails off. That was a nice race."
Individually, Kelly Monteleone won the long jump and triple jump, while Lee was first in the 400 meters.
"Kelly didn't do indoor track this year, but she has picked up right where she left off after the last outdoor season," Miller said. "That's nice to see."
Fowler placed third in the 100-meter dash, while Smith was fourth in the same event.
Adanlete recorded a fourth-place finish in the long jump.
Shantel Smith brought home an eighth-place medal in the 400 dash.
The first-place finish and all other medal-winning performances added up to a second place in the team standings.
Erie McDowell won the title with 69 points, followed by Penn Hills (67) and Norwin (66.5).
"We took 11 girls, and it was a total team effort," Miller said. "Everyone was cheering each other."
The boys 4 x 100 relay team of Dan Darnell, Brandon Bailey, Chris Washington and Brandon Ifill brought home Penn Hills' best finish at the TSTCA meet with a second place in a time of 43.38.
Erie McDowell was first at 43.26.
"The 4 x 100 didn't break 44 at all last year," said Lee Zelkowitz, Penn Hills boys head coach.
"They're only going to get faster."
The 4 x 400 relay of Bailey, Charles Anderson, Micah Wilkerson and Micah Murray placed third (3:29.51), while the 4 x 800 of Dorian Rumble, Kent King, Murray and Anderson took sixth (8:26.27).
Penn Hills boys runners also earned medals in individual events.
Ifill and Bailey placed third (22.57) and sixth (23.13), respectively, in the 200 dash.
Murray was seventh in the 400 (52.62), while Rumble was eighth in the 800.
"The meet was nice because it gave us the chance to see where we are and what we have to work on," Zelkowitz said. "We had some young runners in their first big meet, and they reacted well."
