Local sports briefs: Bowling academy set for April 12

The Greater Pittsburgh Ten Pin Association will sponsor Bowl Like the Pros Academy on April 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Nesbit's Lanes in Plum.

Pros scheduled to appear are Brian Voss, Norm Duke and Bob Learn Jr.

The program includes class time, bowling, one-on-one instruction, pictures, autographs and lunch for $99.

Basketball tourneys

All Sports Tournaments will host spring basketball tournaments for girls and boys in grades four to 11.

All AAU and school teams are welcome, with at least three games guaranteed.

The Tigers/Lions Classic at Penn State-Allegheny in McKeesport will be April 25 to 27.

The Westmoreland Classic at Hempfield Recreational Complex in Greensburg will be May 9 to 11.

The Hotshotz Monroeville Classic at the Monroeville Sports Center will be May 30 to June 1.

Youth golf qualifiers

Registration now is open for local junior golfers to participate in the Pennsylvania regional qualifying tournaments in June for the 40th annual Trusted Choice Big "I" Junior Classic.

Top finishers at each regional will advance to the state tournament, which will be held at the Penn National Golf Club in Fayetteville, Pa., on July 22.

From there, the top four boys and first-place girl will advance to the national tournament at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C., from August 3 to 7.

The Trusted Choice Big "I" Junior Classic draws 4,000 participants annually. Past competitors include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Charlie Howell, Grace Park and Cristie Kerr.

The tournaments are open to any youth golfer whose 19th birthday does not fall on or before Aug. 7.

Registration for a regional tournament is $50.

Local 18-hole qualifiers are on June 24 at Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley and on June 25 at the Country Club of Meadville.

Registration deadline for the two qualifiers is June 17.

Tuite, Engel win

Penn Hills' John Tuite bested the field to win the Monroeville Par 2 Golf League's preseason tournament Sunday.

Tuite carded a 25-under score of 83.

Fellow Penn Hills resident Walter Kizzie was second at 21 under.

Jim Engel won Thursday's preseason tournament by eight strokes.

He finished 26 under, while Hastings was second at 18 under.
