Arline Faas
Married childhood sweetheart

Arline Faas, 95, of Penn Hills, died June 9, 2008.

Born Oct. 2, 1912 in Apollo, she was the daughter of Charles and Goldie Lillian Hilty Augustine.

She and her husband, the Rev. Wallace L. Faas, were childhood sweethearts who married in 1936 before attending school in Chicago to prepare for Christian ministry.

Mrs. Faas and her husband spent the next 39 years in Methodist churches serving Manor, Johnstown, Crafton Heights, Ebensburg and South Greensburg. She was active during that time as pianist, organist and choir director, and used her talents in writing music, poetry and children's stories to express her love of her family and God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband.

Surviving are her daughters, Eunice Fife and her husband, Dale, and Lois Fyke and her husband, George; son, Wally Faas; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at Wolfe Memorial Inc., Forest Hills, where a service was held.

Joseph Andelmo

Trained race horses

Joseph J. Andelmo, 83, of Wilmerding, died June 12, 2008.

Mr. Andelmo was a race horse trainer for more than 45 years and shared his wisdom and advice with many apprentice riders and teachers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pasquale and Catherine Botti Andelmo; wife, Wilma Andelmo; son, Joseph Andelmo; sister, Rose Comunale and her husband, Frank; brothers, Donald Andelmo and his wife, Rose, Guy Andelmo and his wife, Henrietta, Carmine Andelmo, Anthony Andelmo, whose wife, Patricia, survives him, and James Andelmo.

Also surviving are his daughter, Raeann Miller and her husband, Ron; son, Michael Andelmo and his wife, Lori; brother, Louis Andelmo; sister, Marian Alexander and her husband, Lawrence; and numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Friends were received at Alfieri Funeral Home Inc., Wilmerding, where a memorial service was held. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Jude the Apostle Church, Wilmerding. Interment followed at Good Shepherd Cemetery, Monroeville.

Edward Dowling
Harley enthusiast

Edward L. Dowling Jr., 47, of Washington Township, formerly of Plum, died June 11, 2008.

An avid hunter and fisherman who worked alongside his family at Ace Auto Wrecking in Penn Hills, Mr. Dowling enjoyed riding his Harley and went to Bike Week every year. He also enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer their deepest gratitude to Dr. Mayernick, his staff at the Penn Hills office and the oncology floor at Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville.

Surviving are his parents, Edward and Barbara Dowling; sisters, Vicki Samuelsson and her husband, Kjell, and Leslie Gentile; brother, Dale Dowling; foster sister, Lisa McClintock; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends were received at Soxman Funeral Home Ltd. Roth Chapel, Penn Hills, where a service was held.

Josephine Devine

State retiree

Josephine A. Neary Devine, 94, of Turtle Creek, a resident of Sunrise in Monroeville, died June 12, 2008.

She was a retired payroll supervisor with Marcy State Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Devine; daughter, Bonita Adams; and sister, Mary Mower.

Surviving are her nieces, Peggy Mariani and Linda Gallick; and many other nieces and nephews.

Friends were received at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home, Turtle Creek. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Colman Church, Turtle Creek.

Bernadette Farbacher
Grandmother of one

Bernadette L. Farbacher, 61, of Penn Hills, died June 10, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Enes Zambanini Buccilli; and sister, Patty Buccilli.

Surviving are her husband, Gerald Farbacher; sisters, Michele Buccilli and Barbara Mileski; son, David Farbacher and his wife, Tracy; daughter, Jennifer Parco and her husband, Steve; and a granddaughter.

Friends were received at William F. Gross Funeral Home Ltd., Penn Hills. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Gerard Majella Church. Interment followed at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Lillian Fisher
Grandmother of three

Lillian Claire Fisher, 89, of Penn Hills, died June 11, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Catherine Dusch Armstrong; and brother, James Armstrong.

Surviving are her daughters, Nancy Eisenhart and Catherine Fisher; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at Findlay C. Wylie Funeral Home Inc., where a service was held. Interment was in Mt. Royal Cemetery, Glenshaw.

John Vallino
Navy veteran

John R. Vallino, 76, of Plum, formerly of Forest Hills, died June 9, 2008.

He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War who served on two minesweepers during four major engagements.

Mr. Vallino was the former owner and mechanic of Atlantic Service Station on Ardmore Boulevard in Forest Hills and the ARCO in Penn Hills. He was an avid fisherman with a quick-witted sense of humor.

Mr. Vallino was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemarie Ferrero Vallino.

Surviving are his wife, Roberta Shae Vallino; sons, Kenneth Vallino and his wife, Charlene, and Robert Vallino; daughters, Janet Wola and, Kathy Roche; sister, Anna Marie Truffa and her husband, Lou; and six grandchildren.

Friends were received at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home, Turtle Creek, where a blessing service was held.

Maria Cardillo
Native of Italy

Maria A. Cardillo, 92, of Plum, died June 13, 2008, in St. Margaret Seneca Place.

Born in Italy, she was the daughter of the late Francesco and Angela (Zottola) Tommarello.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Giuseppe; two brothers; and a sister.

Surviving are her son, Andy Cardillo and his wife, Lina; daughter, Maria Lisa Cua and her husband, Gaetano; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Friends were received at Wm. F. Gross Funeral Home Ltd. Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Joy Church. Interment was at Allegheny Cemetery.

Carl Schaffer
Oakmont native

Carl S. Schaffer, 91, of Verona, died June 12, 2008, at Willows at Presbyterian Senior Care.

Born Sept. 24, 1916, in Oakmont, he was the son of the late Karl and Anna (Leopold) Schaffer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Schaffer.

Surviving are his daughters, Corinne Schaffer of Penn Hills and Carleen Martin and her husband, Larry, of Penn Hills; a brother; and two sisters.

Friends were received at BurketTruby Funeral Home Cremation and Alternative Services Inc., where a service was held. Interment was private.
