Penn Hills fitness team set for championships

For the past seven months, members of the Penn Hills boys fitness team have been working out, getting stronger and conditioning themselves for a shot at national glory.

The National High School Physical Fitness Championships are Saturday in San Diego.

Six members of the team -- seniors Sean McNash and Vince Ruggiero and sophomores Nick Cyphers, Chris Flewellen, Rick McCarrick and Cory Glasgow -- will represent Penn Hills at the event.

"The guys have worked hard, and they want to see that hard work pay off," said Bob Martini, Penn Hills head coach.

Thirty-seven boys began the season in October, and only 10 made it to May. Thirteen girls started the season, and none remained with the team. Martini said it's the first time since the girls team was formed in 1976 that no female athletes from Penn Hills will compete at the national competition.

"It's a demanding sport," Martini said. "The team works out three nights a week for two and a half hours each night."

The six Penn Hills boys athletes qualified for nationals at the state qualifying meet at Emmaus High School in March.

It was the team's only competition of the season leading up this weekend's national competition.

Penn Hills is the only high school in Western Pennsylvania with a fitness team.

At nationals, each competitor will have to do 100 sit-ups in two minutes, 60 push-ups without stopping in two minutes, three standing broad jumps in three minutes, 30 pull-ups in two minutes and a 300-yard shuttle run in 44 seconds.

There will be a three-minute rest period between each event.

Awards will be presented to the top individuals and teams. The top coaches will receive awards, as well.
